The Power of Words

As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. -Mark 11:20-22-

We live in an era where emotions hang on every word. Yet it was something that the Bible addressed back in the days Jesus and the Apostles. James said that the one who can tame their tongue is the perfect person (Js. 3:2). Jesus said that our life comes from the word of God (Matt. 4:4). We will be judged by what we say (Matt. 12:36-37).

Words will define who we are as Christians, so we must be careful as to present ourselves as those with faith in Christ. Jesus responded “Have faith in God” to remind them of the power of faith and words. Jesus in cursing the fig tree (Mark 11:12-14) illustrated not just the judgment of Israel and the result of an unfruitful and faithless church, but also the power of God’s word and how our words (prayers) through faith works the same way.

Let the words that we speak be that of life, encouragement, support, comfort, and if rebuke is needed, may it be done in love and in truth. May people come to know the greatness of our God through our words.

In Him,
