By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and he worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff. - Hebrews 11:21 -
I remember a small old woman who even in her last days walked up the stairs of the church and sat in the back of the sanctuary. As she walked in with her oxygen tank dangling around her small little ears, I wondered why she just didn’t stay home. When I talked to her, it was her desire to be close to the Lord and all his people that encourages her and makes her struggles light.
Too often, when we become ill or experience a physical altering moment or phase in our life, we make the excuse that we’re getting too old or too ill or we don’t want people to see us this way. This passage uses Jacob and not Israel to refer to the fact that it wasn’t Jacob at his position as the leader of a nation “worshipping God as he leaned on his staff” and blessings his grandchildren, but it was Jacob the person. It was Jacob who blessed and worshiped.
No matter where you are in life, being a blessing and worshiping God is something that we are to do until our last breath. How encouraging to those around you to see your allegiance to God even on your dying bed.
In Him,
